Civil Justice Victory for Salon Workers
Nail salon workers find justice. Three former workers at 167 Nail Plaza, a salon on the Upper West Side, were awarded more than $225,000 by a jury of their peers on Friday in Federal District Court. Their awards included a $3,500 settlement payment, payments for overtime violations, and compensation for retaliation, including being fired for demanding lunch breaks. The workers were represented by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. A spokesman told NPR that this victory will likely set a trend for scores of other beauty salons where workers face similar mistreatment.
