Stripped of Clothing, But Not Remedies
This New York Times article announces a settlement between illegally strip-searched individuals and the county whose jail performed the searches. Cambden County is shelling out $7.5 mil which will compensate as many as 20,000 people who were illegally searched.
According to this AP Article, plaintiffs said the jail would search “every one sent to the jail awaiting trial, even if there was no reason to think the suspects were hiding contraband. They also say some people who were arrested on charges as minor as failure to pay parking tickets were held for up to 24 hours after they had paid bail while officials checked for other warrants.”
Well, obviously this practice was ridiculous and demeaning. Good thing the plaintiffs weren’t also stripped of their civil justice remedies.
