Nike Says Just Do It to $7.6 mil Race-Bias Settlement

According to this Washington Post article Nike has agreed to settle with 400 plaintiffs in a class action race discrimination case against the company’s Chicago store, filed in December 2003. The company has agreed to pay $7.6 million dollars in settlement but denies “all allegations of wrongdoing and liability in the litigation… Nike has also agreed to take certain affirmative steps, including appointing a compliance officer at its headquarters and diversity training of supervisors at Niketown Chicago, according to the filing.”

This AP article gives more detail about plaintiffs’ claims that “managers at the retail store used racial slurs to refer to black workers and customers… segregated black employees into lower-paying jobs as stockroom workers and cashiers… made unfounded accusations of theft against black workers and directed store security to monitor black employees and customers because of their race.
