Hearing Today: 9/11, Government Response to Air Quality Safety Concerns

Oversight Hearing on the EPA’s Response to Air Quality Issues Arising from the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001: Were There Substantive Due Process Violations?

This hearing began at 1:00p.m., and you can view the hearing now via live webcam here. Questions asked and discussed include: Did the federal government properly respond to the 9/11 environmental disaster? Did competing concerns (like a desire to get back to business, ease public fears, etc.) motivate reports about air quality that gave us a false sense of security?

Visit here to view a lengthier blog about it with links to YouTube coverage from the beginning. This is the first comprehensive congressional oversight commission on this controversy and the first time Christine Todd Whitman is officially addressing this in front of Congress. Whitman’s testimony (surprisingly or not surprisingly, depending how you look at it) is fairly consistent with her prior statements. About allegations that the government did not provide accurate information or respond sufficiently to the danger, she insists that there was no government wrongdoing, omission, etc. This New York Times article discusses her testimony.
