Brennan Center: Civil Legal Aid Organizations in Illinois Seek to Expand Legal Services to Farmers
From the Brennan Center for Justice:
Civil Legal Aid Organizations in Illinois Seek to Expand Legal Services to FarmersCivil legal aid organizations in Illinois sent a survey to farmers this week to explore their need for law-related educational programming and legal services. Designed by LSC-funded Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, LSC-funded Prairie State Legal Services, the Illinois Bar Foundation, the University of Illinois, the Agricultural Law Section of the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Illinois Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, the survey was sent to 3,000 randomly selected farmers throughout the state who are representative of the state’s farming community (in terms of region, type of operation, and other variables). Illinois farming is currently undergoing a transition in which smaller farmers are finding it more difficult to compete in the marketplace, and the survey is designed to identify ways to assist farmers through the transition. Donald Uchtmann, University of Illinois professor of agricultural law, says, “The results will help identify the legal issues that farmers believe are the most important for their operations and for others in their region. The information will guide us as we create educational programs based on their needs and as continuing legal education programs are developed for practicing attorneys across Illinois.” Press Release, Farmer Legal Survey Underway, Illinois Farm Bureau, Feb. 7, 2007.
